I found Filth to be a fascinating exploration of a deeply flawed character whose inner turmoil is laid bare with brutal honesty. Welsh’s use of language and stream-of-consciousness style really immerses you in the protagonist’s twisted perspective. It’s uncomfortable at times, but that discomfort feels purposeful, forcing readers to confront aspects of human nature that are often hidden. Did anyone else find the shifting narrative voice effective in portraying the character’s mental state?

One moment that stuck with me was when the protagonist’s self-destructive behavior collided with moments of unexpected vulnerability. Those rare glimpses of humanity made the character more than just a caricature of vice and corruption. It’s interesting how Welsh balances the grotesque elements with moments that evoke sympathy. How do you think this balance affects the overall tone of the novel?
