I found Jacobs' argument that cities are the primary engines of economic development really eye-opening. Instead of viewing cities as just consumers or extensions of rural economies, she highlights how they create new wealth through innovation and diversity. It made me rethink how we approach urban planning and economic policy. I especially appreciated her focus on the importance of small-scale, local entrepreneurship as a driver of growth. What do you think Jacobs means by 'import replacement' and why is it so crucial for a city's economy?

One part that stuck with me was when Jacobs discusses how new ideas and industries often emerge from unusual combinations of existing knowledge within cities. This really challenged the common belief that economic growth is mostly about scaling up existing industries. The emphasis on creativity and diversity as essential to urban economies feels very relevant even today. Did anyone else find her critique of centralized economic planning convincing, or do you think there are limits to her approach?
